Research summary
Weight gain and difficulty maintaining a physically active lifestyle are real problems for new kidney transplant recipients. Despite this, routine access to physiotherapy and dietitian input is not available for these patients. Obesity is a real issue for kidney transplant patients with an estimate of two thirds of the population being overweight or obese. Research shows that patients, who gain more than 15% of their initial weight within the first year of transplantation, will have higher change of dying from conditions not associated with their kidney function within 10 years. The King's College Hospital already provide a successful renal weight management service, which a proportion of these are Kidney transplant patients. This study,The ExeRTion study involves qualitative data collection, digitalizing of existing weight management material to create a novel online weight management resource. This resource will be named "exertion" with kidney transplant and transplant health care professionals input to shape and refine the resource.
