Research summary
Summary of Research
Examining a combined exercise rehabilitation programme for adults with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and/or Heart Failure.
A combined exercise rehabilitation programme has recently begun at University Hospital Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust, as part of service improvement. Adults that are breathless, primarily with a diagnosis of COPD or heart failure are being referred onto this programme. This is the first time at UHL, that patients are treated largely by their symptoms, as opposed to disease type. Due to this novel aspect, researchers want to collect data on how feasible or appropriate a combined programme is. Secondly, the change in health outcomes has not yet been reported as this is a new exercise programme. The present study hopes to examine this change. Another unique aspect of this research is the measures we are collecting- we are combining traditional cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation assessments alongside research based tests.
Participants that volunteer for this study will be asked to have their body composition, cardio-metabolic risk (assessed by blood sample and noninvasive measure of arterial stiffness), frailty and lung function assessed, as well as extra questionnaires. All participants will then have their usual care tests before starting rehabilitation (a strength test, walking test and questionnaires). All participants then complete the usual care combined exercise rehabilitation programme. This is usual care and the programme is not affected by research. Once the rehabilitation programme is complete, participants will repeat their research assessments and usual care tests. Participants will be provided with their health results before being invited to a voluntary focus group/ discussion.
This research is only available to adults that have been referred to the combined exercise rehabilitation programme as part of their medical treatment, alongside other criteria.
Summary of Results
The data show that it is feasible to collect novel outcome measures in an assessment for adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and/or chronic heart failure (CHF) as part of a combined exercise rehabilitation programme. The trial and the combined exercise rehabilitation programme also appeared to be acceptable to healthcare professionals and participants. It is anticipated the findings from this feasibility trial will influence a future large-scale trial, which will be adequately powered to assess changes in cardiometabolic health in a COPD and CHF population undergoing a combined exercise rehabilitation programme.
