Research summary
We aim to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of an exercise programme to improve quality of life outcomes and weight in endometrial cancer survivors.
Endometrial cancer is the most common gynaecological cancer in the United Kingdom, its treatment includes surgery (hysterectomy & removal of both tubes and ovaries) with or without radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Its diagnosis and treatment represent major physical and psychological stress for women, and negatively impacts their quality of life.
Furthermore, sexual dysfunction, infertility and other treatment-related sequelae (e.g. early menopause and lymphoedema), can adversely impact quality of life, and can persist well into their survivorship years. We believe it is imperative to evaluate interventions to improve outcomes of this patient group. We therefore want to evaluate the feasibility of an exercise programme as a means to improve the quality of life outcomes of women diagnosed with endometrial cancer who have completed surgical treatment.Women diagnosed with endometrial cancer who have completed surgical treatment will be eligible for the study.
The study will be conducted at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, in Truro.
The study will take 18 months as we will recruit patients for 12 months and follow up will be 6 months. Participants will undergo an exercise programme that consists of ten one-weekly sessions of 60 minutes with a personal trainer (Cancer Exercise Specialist). The exercise programme entails a combination of cardiovascular exercise, pillar strength training (hip and core stability), resistance training (muscular strength and endurance training) and flexibility training.
