  • Research summary

In the controversial 2016 junior doctors’ contract a system was introduced whereby if educational opportunities were missed in order to make good service provision, any immediate safety concerns, time beyond that scheduled was worked or changes to work schedules were made without due and appropriate notice, junior doctors could make a report, without fear or favour, to their ‘Guardian of Safe Working’ and Clinical Supervisor.

This system, anecdotally since its inception in August 2016 has had mixed results.

This piece of research intends to garner themes through semistructured interviews for questionnaires to be distributed to junior doctors, managers and consultants to build up a picture of how well the system is working for patient safety, doctor comfort and safety and NHS Culture.

There has not been much formal research produced on the system of exception reporting, and it is important that the system, at this stage of inception, is reviewed to ensure that it is fit for purpose.
