  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the psychosocial needs of kidney patients and the role of the renal social worker within the UK; to examine activity, models of psychosocial service delivery and outcome measures in response to meeting the needs of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients.

Data will be obtained by observing case study sites; renal units with different psychosocial provision models (including and not including a defined social worker role and social workers that are funded by Kidney Care UK (previously British Kidney Patient Association). The research will focus on patients and staff, to explore activity and experiences and measure impact of the social services provided. Using a mixed methods approach, the strength of both qualitative (focus groups, interviews) and quantitative (health outcome measure instruments, questionnaires) research tools will be combined to contribute to the generation of an evidence base for renal social work and provide social workers with tools to measure their own impact on patients. In addition, this evidence will inform the funding and future provision of service by Kidney Care UK.
