  • Research summary

Coeliac disease is associated with low bone mineral density and this increases the risk of bone fracture. Other studies relating to this subject have included both sex's with a wide range of age groups. This may have influenced the outcome of correlation data between bone density and parathyroid hormone (PTH). One possible factor is oestrogen, a hormone which can antagonise the effect of PTH on bone. Men produce oestrogen through aromatisation of testosterone , but similar levels of free testosterone fall gradually with age and the values for estradiol tend to show similar declines. Inclusion of women in studies however often overlooks the rapid change in estradiol levels at the time of menopause from high levels, which might antagonise PTH action and tend to restrict elevation of PTH values. Therefore the aim of the study is to examine bone mineral density z scores in newly diagnosed females with coeliac diease.
