Research summary
Cardiovascular is the leading cause of death worldwide. Events such as stroke or heart attack are principally the result of sudden blockage of a blood vessel due to clot formation. Studying blood clot formation and what influences blood clot formation may help develop future therapies to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke.
It is not possible to directly study blood clot formation in humans in vivo (in the body) safely. The Badimon Chamber is a specially designed piece of equipment which allows blood clot formation to be studied ex vivo (out of the body) in an environment which mimics in vivo (in the body) in human conditions as closely as possible. By altering the conditions within the Badimon chamber, the mechanisms of blood clot formation can be studied and the effect of study agents on blood clot formation assessed without the need to expose volunteers.
This study will use the Badimon chamber to assess blood clot formation and factors which influence or modify blood clot formation in a model which is relevant to humans. Volunteers will attend the Clinical Research Facility at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for a maximum of 2 visits. During each visit the volunteer will be connected to the Badimon chamber for a series of perfusion runs lasting 5 minutes each. No more than 4 runs will be performed per visit (maximum total volume of blood per visit 240 ml). After completion of the final run the volunteer is discharged and the study ends for that participant.
Only healthy volunteers will be recruited. Volunteers will be recruited by poster and digital advertisement confined to the University of Edinburgh or from the existing Clinical Research Facility database of known volunteers who have agreed to be contacted for future studies.
