  • Research summary

The Veterans Universal Passport (VUP) is a pilot project to help veterans referred for mental health problems who require support from multiple agencies. The VUP is a single patient held record that that keeps all the vital information about the individual in one place. This initiative is currently being piloted by the Midlands and East Veterans Service (MEVS), and the Veterans and Families Institute (VFI) are consultants on a survey-based evaluation of the efficacy of the VUP. The VFI have been funded by NHS England to extend this project to include a qualitative evaluation of the impact of this initiative on the veterans issued with the VUP, their carers and the service providers they come into contact with.

The main aims of this qualitative evaluation are:
    • To establish the degree to which the VUP has been useful in improving the experience of accessing health and social care services for veterans and their carers.
    • To establish the utility of the VUP for health and social care professionals who have come into contact with it.

Researchers at the VFI will carry out three focus groups with a sample of the veterans issued with the VUP, their carers and service providers. The VFI will carry out the focus groups, data analysis and produce the final report.

We will focus on the following issues:
    • Experience of using the VUP for veterans, carers and service providers
    • Utility of the VUP in improving access to and experience of health and social care services.
    • Strengths of the VUP and suggested improvements.

A final report will be produced by the VFI outlining the main themes from the thematic analysis of the focus group data. It will provide more in-depth feedback on the utility and impact of the VUP than the survey-based evaluation, and enable improvements to be made to future service delivery.
