Research summary
Gastrointestinal endoscopy is the investigation of the gut using flexible cameras. The endoscopy team are a group of individuals who work together to perform these procedures. They consist of an endoscopist (the person performing the procedure) and assistants (support the endoscopist during the procedure). The skills that this team must use in order to provide effective and safe patient care are complex. We know that team-working skills are especially important and closely linked with patient outcomes. These are otherwise known as non-technical skills.\n\nIn a previous study we identified the non-technical skills that were important to team-working in endoscopy. Whilst it is important to know these, we need to be able to apply them in practice to improve patient care. In other healthcare settings, this has been achieved using specially-designed tools. These tools allow observers to analyse the skills within a team interaction and rate them. This can be used to measure team-working in training and real-life. No such tool exists for endoscopy currently.\n\nThe aim of this study is to develop and test a tool for measuring team-working in endoscopy. This study will be split into two phases. The first phase will use the skills we have already identified and ask a group of experts to refine this into a working tool. The second phase will test this tool in practice, using video-recorded endoscopic procedures to assess team-working.
