  • Research summary

Tameside, Oldham and Glossop Mind run the IAPT Plus Active Monitoring service. The aim of the service is to offer early help and support for people who are experiencing common mental health problems such as, depression and anxiety.

Patients can be referred to the Active Monitoring service if they go to see their GP about symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. They can also refer themselves directly to the service by attending a drop-in session; these sessions are held in community locations across Oldham several times per week. After drop-in patients are offered an assessment session, followed by up to four follow-up sessions. The service is delivered by specially trained practitioners who deliver an Active Monitoring Self-Guided intervention.

Mind have commissioned this evaluation study. The main aim is to find out if the service is effective in reducing symptoms of depression. We are also interested to know what patients and GPs who refer into the service think about it, if they find it acceptable, and if it is cost-effective.

We will invite everyone who attends the service over a 6-month period to take part in this project. For those people who consent to participate we will collect and analyse the results of the questionnaires that they routinely complete at the beginning and end of their treatment with the service. These questions measure, depression, anxiety, well-being, and satisfaction. We will also ask for permission to contact everyone who takes part by telephone 3 months after the end of their treatment to repeat these questionnaires.

In addition, we will invite some patients (approximately 20) to take part in an in-depth interview about their experiences of using the IAPT Plus Active Monitoring service. We will also invite General Practitioners (GPs) and other referrers to an interview about their experiences of the service.
