  • Research summary

Mental health problems in children and young people (CYP) are a growing concern worldwide, with around one in seven affected. In England, increasing numbers of CYP are waiting for or receiving mental health support, placing significant pressure on services and making it harder for families to access timely help.

Digital tools, such as mobile apps, are becoming an important way to support young people’s mental health. These digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) can help reduce waiting lists, provide support sooner, and make it easier for CYP to access help when they need it. Early research shows that DMHIs may reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and improve access to care. However, evidence is still limited. There is little understanding of how consistently young people use these tools, and many apps have not been co-designed with CYP. Additionally, families often lack clear information on which apps are safe, effective, and appropriate.

To help address this gap, the Mental Health Research for Innovation Centre (M RIC), a partnership between Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust (MCFT) and the University of Liverpool, has worked with ORCHA (Organisation for the Review for Care and Health Apps) to develop the Directory of Children and Young People’s Health Apps (D-CYPHA). This online library contains trusted mental health apps reviewed against recognised standards, designed specifically for CYP and their parents or guardians. Young people and families contributed to its design and helped select apps to ensure it is practical and easy to use.

Alongside the Directory, a digital formulary will be available to healthcare professionals, enabling them to recommend approved apps directly to families.

This study will assess how impactful and acceptable D-CYPHA is for CYP and families, and how useful the paired formulary is for clinicians.
