  • Research summary

The research will evaluate the Compass Service, which is an extension of existing services (e.g. education and outreach services) to support young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties and those in or on the edge of care. The new service is being implemented as part of routine service delivery.

The aim of the evaluation is to understand: under what circumstances, by what means and in what ways can the Compass Service help meet the needs of young people in or on the edge of care and their carers, improve their outcomes, and enhance their experience of care?

To answer this question, we will conduct interviews with young people accessing the Compass Service and interviews/focus groups with their carers. The evaluation will last approximately six months and will involve one site (Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust). Up to 20-25 young people and 20-25 carers will be recruited from those accessing the Compass Service. Young people will be invited to take part in an interview and carers will be invited to take part in an interview or focus group, depending on their preference. Young people and carers will be asked about their experience of the Compass Service and what aspects of care they found most helpful.

Findings from the evaluation will be used to improve the Compass Service and ultimately, to improve the experience of care for young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties and those in or on the edge of care.
