Research summary
The majority of teenagers and young adults (TYA) who are diagnosed with cancer in the United Kingdom will become long-term survivors. Adapting to life after cancer can be difficult for patients of any age, and TYA with cancer face additional challenges related to the transition to adulthood that is taking place at the same time. Young people with cancer may have unmet self-care needs related to understanding their diagnosis and treatment consequences, reintegration into society and maintaining their health and well-being. If these needs remain unmet there may be long-term negative physical and psychosocial consequences. Interventions that support self-management can confer benefits to adults and young people with chronic conditions and cancer patients, but these have not been evaluated in young people with cancer.
The proposed study will undertake preliminary evaluation of a self-management workshop for young people aged 18-25 years who have recently completed treatment for a range of cancers. The workshop will be evaluated to explore its acceptability, feasibility and potential impact. Evaluation will incorporate pre-test and post-test standardised outcome questionnaires for quality of life and self-efficacy, a feedback questionnaire on workshop content and delivery, and semi-structured interviews to explore the experiences of young people who have recently completed cancer treatment and provide an insight into the role self-management workshops might play at this critical time. In addition, the young people’s views on the acceptability and relevance of the outcome questionnaires will be sought.
