Research summary
Introduction: Pneumoperitoneum (filling the abdominal space with air developing a working space in laparoscopic operations) can cause renal damage and this is not measured by conventional measurement of renal function. The level of plasma and urine NGAL (Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin) protein marker is likely to quantify this renal loss.
Objectives: To study whether pneumoperitoneum causes renal damage using NGAL.
Research Methodology: We propose to study a total of 52 patients (based on statistical advice). 26 patients will have laparoscopic nephrectomy (removal of kidney) and 26 patients (controls, with both kidneys intact) undergoing laparoscopic hemicolectomy (removal of half of the colon) or hysterectomy (removal of uterus). All patient will have the operations performed through a trans peritoneal approach (incision through the peritoneum).
NGAL will be measured before and after the operations.REC name
