Research summary
A number of conditions during pregnancy can be associated with normal lung development. These include preterm birth: of children that are born prematurely, complications with the lungs resulting breathing difficulties is a significant problem. These lung problems can even persist throughout childhood and be ongoing in adult life. Other congenital conditions such as those affecting the kidneys of the baby, resulting in a reduced amount of fluid in the womb, certain babies with heart or lung congenital abnormalities or problems with the development of the diaphragm can also cause children to have long term breathing complications.
30 babies that have a high risk of breathing difficulties and 30 healthy babies will be included, all of whom will have had an antenatal MRI scan as part of other studies or clinical indicated during their pregnancy
We will measure the lung volumes of these children at a number of different time points and seek to follow the children up to one year of age.
