Research summary
With increasing recognition that patient-rated comfort in colonoscopy has a higher impact on overall patient experience and satisfaction there has been a move towards the use of patient-rated comfort scores, particularly in the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP). However there have been few previous comparative studies of patient-rated scales and this will be the focus of the current study.\n\nOur primary aim will be to assess the correlations between patient- and nurse- rated pain scales and other patient-rated outcomes including patient satisfaction and willingness to undergo a repeat procedure. Secondary outcomes will be to study the effect of the type of analgesia/sedation chosen by the patient on comfort scores and other patient-rated outcomes including satisfaction and willingness to undergo a repeat procedure.\n\nThis study will be conducted on patients undergoing colonoscopy as part of the BCSP at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. All patients attending for colonoscopy will be eligible to participate.\n\nWe plan to conduct the study over a one year period. Patients willing to participate will be asked to fill in questionnaires before and after the procedure. There will be no further contact with patients after this.
