  • Research summary

We will investigate the oral, circulating and faecal microbiome in patients with oral precancer changes in mucosa and in patients being treated for head and neck cancer. While traditional risk factors for head and neck cancer remain tobacco use and alcohol consumption, an increasing number of patients present without these risk factors present. The role of the microbiome is increasingly understood to be significant in carcinogenesis. We will compare the data generated with the known normal microbiota for the same geographical population to find differences which could be exploited to reduce cancer risk for this patient group.
