  • Research summary

This is a study of musculoskeletal disease(s) utilising tissue and/or fluid from patients’ joints removed at the time of a planned procedure that is either diagnostic or therapeutic in nature that would otherwise be discarded. The primary and most common disease of interest includes but is not exclusive to osteoarthritis. Demographic information and patient reported outcome measures will be incorporated into patient analysis. Age and gender matched patients, unaffected by the musculoskeletal disease of interest, but who require other invasive procedures of the knee e.g. partial meniscectomy, limb amputation etc. for other medical reasons, will also be asked to donate joint tissue and fluid. This will provide important normal or near normal samples for comparison in in this study. Discard samples of tissue and fluid will be isolated for a range of analyses. Synovial fluid will be collected for both proteomic and metabolomic evaluation on the samples collected to evaluate the fluid for biomarkers of musculoskeletal disease. Synovium will also be acquired for histological analysis. Combining the results from these different research approaches using the latest systems biology methods will provide a comprehensive analysis of musculoskeletal disease such as osteoarthritis and early cartilage injury it may identify possible new routes to early diagnosis, prognosis of subtypes and individualised treatment.
