Research summary
NHS England is funding a programme to respond to areas of identified need and clinical risk for people affected by sickle cell disease. Nested in this programme is a pilot to implement UEC/ED bypass units that people with sickle cell disease can attend when they are in crisis. The units will be operational for 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will operate with a triage line that will also be operating 24/7. The aim of the pilot is to deliver optimal care more quickly via contact with specialist health professionals who can ensure correct levels of treatment are administered.
The pilot will run for two years and we will evaluate implementation of the pilot with the help of service user interviews in pilot sites. We will also evaluate service user experiences with UEC/ED bypass unit with the help of a questionnaire. The research will recruit participants from the pilot sites and research interviews will be conducted remotely via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or a telephone call.
The study will last until March 2025, with data collection completed in December 2024.
