Research summary
This study evaluates Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board’s (CTMUHB) redesigned fast-track neurodevelopmental (ND) referral and assessment model, examining how it reconfigures ND pathway governance and diagnostic practices and with what consequences for service capacity, access and equity. The project adopts a multi-site qualitative case-study design, with CTMUHB as the core case and selected ND services in other Welsh health boards as comparative sites (subject to approvals). Data collection will comprise purposively sampled semi-structured interviews with approximately 8-10 clinical and 12-15 non-clinical professionals involved in ND referral, triage, assessment and related cross-agency support, supplemented by 2-4 focus groups where feasible, and a documentary/service-data review of pathway materials to contextualise findings. Analysis will use an abductive, theory-led qualitative approach to generate transferable learning about pathway design under conditions of scarcity. The planned study duration is approximately six months, subject to governance and ethics approvals.
