Research summary
Parkinson’s disease is hugely variable, fluctuating and progressive, and increasing in prevalence. Standard time-locked clinic review fails to meet the needs of patients and carers, and contributes to staff stress. We are implementing an innovative new Parkinson’s service, delivering home-based care using new technology. Patients will have monitoring of their Parkinson’s in their own homes. Patients will be able to ask for contact and review at times they need it. Integral to the project is a new way of working for the Parkinson’s nurses to ensure they are more supported as part of a larger specialist care team. The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of patients, carers and staff using the new service.
People with Parkinson’s (PwP) and carers will be recruited as they enter the new pathway. PwP will have two semi-structured interviews, one at the start and one after 6 months on the pathway, exploring their satisfaction with their care, capturing their wellbeing and how they feel the service impacted the quality of their care. 3 months after commencing the pathway they will be invited to take part in a focus group also exploring these themes. At this time, a focus group for carers will also take place.
Staff delivering the new pathway will be recruited before the new pathway is launched. They will complete a wellbeing questionnaire, the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being scale (WEMWBS) and have a brief interview to explore their responses in more depth. After 6-9 months delivering the pathway both the WEMWBS and interview will be repeated.
