  • Research summary

EMPOWERing individuals and communities to manage their own CARE (EMPOWERCARE) is a 33 month project involving 4 European countries. The project involves partners coming together to co-create a social innovation to make local services for older people more efficient and effective through the development of a community asset approach to elder care. The 13 partners from the UK, the Netherlands, France and Belgium (although this application relates to just the non-NHS site in the UK) are working together to get to the heart of what matters most to communities through the skills and expertise of local people aged 65+, and those aged 50+ with at least one chronic condition, to make a difference to health and wellbeing and respond to current gaps in the care of older people. The innovation will develop a new approach, with an emphasis on enablement technologies, to the rising demand for health and social care services by increasing numbers of older people. The EMPOWERCARE Approach will address the issues concerning societies around the care of ageing populations by drawing on community assets and resources. This will involve older people in decisions about their own health and wellbeing, and enable them to keep healthier and in their own homes and communities safely for longer.
    Project objectives:
    1. An empowerment strategy to deliver what matters to individuals and communities in order to manage their own care.
    2. A package of resources to enable transformation of the workforce.
    3. A Technology Blueprint on initiatives and technology that support enablement at individual and community level.
    4. A comprehensive evaluation report on the value of the EMPOWERCARE approach (Strategy,
    Workplace Transformation, and Technology Blueprint)
Canterbury Christ Church University’s role in the project is to undertake an evaluation of the development process and impact of the EMPOWERCARE Approach (objective 4 above).
