Research summary
The 2012 Oral Health Survey showed that 27.9% of 5 year olds had decay experience. Many children, for a variety of reasons are unable to complete all of their dental treatment in the dental chair. Dental caries has become the most common reason children aged between 5-9 years old are admitted to hospital. The cost to the NHS annually is reported to be £30 million.
Guidelines on the use of Dental General Anaesthetics (DGAs) published by the Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland in 2011 advises that the pre assessment should ideally be completed by a specialist in Paediatric Dentistry. Studies have shown that the quality of assessment and treatment received in the UK varies greatly, with the number of repeat DGAs high. There is minimal research available about the outcome of children's dental health following DGA when their pre assessment has been completed by a specialist in Paediatric Dentistry. It is hypothesised that an assessment prior to DGA by a specialist in Paediatric Dentistry would improve the outcome for the child's dental health.
The study will evaluate the pre DGA assessment service run by City Health Partnership Hull (CHCP.) All paediatric patients seen by the specialist paediatric dentistry team for their initial pre DGA assessment in the calendar year 2015 will be included. The investigators will assess patient records. Dental indices before and after the DGA as well as the assessment and treatment by the specialist in Paediatric Dentistry will be recorded.
