  • Research summary

Study looking at people aged 18yrs and older admitted under the major trauma team at St Mary’s hospital with a neck injury requiring the patient to wear a spinal collar. The study will collect demographic data, other injuries sustained, results from patient surveys looking at pain scores and ability to complete activities of daily living. Any imaging of the neck done as part of standard clinical care will be analysed for measurements of angulation. Pain relief that the patient is prescribed and last dose of each analgesic will be documented.\n\nThe study will allow us to compare the level of discomfort caused by the spinal collar in patient’s with a neck injury over a range of ages. Patient satisfaction is part of routine practise and of improving care. Our hypothesis is that the spinal collars are uncomfortable in the elderly population and therefore poorly tolerated.
