Research summary
Due to the complexity of both peripheral and central fatigue this study has been designed to compare control subjects age matched with people who have MS using a paradigm that will enable different aspects of fatigue to be evaluated and the impact of fatigue with or without cognitive deficit to be independently evaluated. The study combines fMRI to investigate responses to simple task requirements with and without an alerting signal warning the subject prior to presentation of a task que with a physical task (actual or imagined) requiring muscle movements graded according to a pattern of ques presented to the participant. This part of the study will take place in the scanner to provide fMRI data obtained during task performance and stored for later evaluation. The outcome of these studies will be linked to neuropsychological tests undertaken before and after the fMRI tests. This part of the study will take place in a quiet clinical assessment room.
