  • Research summary

This study is a health services evaluation of the BTS collaborative model in the context of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) and sepsis in secondary care settings. The collaborative includes 22 trusts across South East England and has been formed by UCLPartners (http://www.uclpartners.com).The collaborative teams will assess the effectiveness of BTS to achieve their expected outcomes and will have a keen interest in understanding the processes by which collaboratives work, which will be explored by this evaluation.

The proposed approach of evaluation in this programme will utilise a Researcher in Residence (RiR) Model. The researcher will be embedded in the collaborative team(s) and will use participatory approaches to enable the collaborative leads and other team members to ‘learn by doing’ in a developmental manner. The evaluation will focus on developing an understanding of ‘how’ and ‘why’ some organisations engage enthusiastically with the process and others do not. The RiR is an emerging model that embraces the concept of ‘co-creating’ knowledge between researchers and practitioners, using a range of different participatory approaches. Practically the model places the researcher as a key member of the delivery team, as opposed to an external observer of change. Research expertise is communicated to and negotiated with, rather than imposed on, the practitioners in the delivery team.

Throughout the study, to reflect the nature of participatory research, the proposed approaches to data collection and analysis will be negotiated with team members. This shared approach and the provision of regular feedback reporting to all trusts participating in the evaluation will propagate learning through the use of evidence and co-created knowledge.
