  • Research summary

In a move to improve the experiences of people with dementia while in hospital in Wessex (Dorset, Hampshire and Isle of Wight), the Academic Health Sciences Network is working with eight acute hospitals to identify, spread and share good practice in dementia care in hospital. This includes testing out different non-clinical interventions, such as volunteer befrienders, open visiting for carers, arts and music in hospitals and having dementia champions in wards.

Researchers from Bournemouth University Dementia Institute have been commissioned to evaluate these interventions; specifically to assess what, if any, difference they make to the experience and outcomes for people with dementia who are in hospital and their family visitors. The evaluation will also determine which ones are having the greatest impact and which ones are not. We will use a variety of methods (observations, short interviews, focus groups and participant diaries). Spending two days in each hospital, we will seek information from (i) five patients with dementia and their five visiting family members/carers, and (ii) 8-10 staff/volunteers delivering the interventions in each hospital. Specifically we will find out participants' experiences of delivering or receiving the intervention and any impact this has had on patient and visitor well-being.

We aim to recruit 5 people with dementia able to give informed consent and their 5 visiting family members/carers, and 8-10 hospital staff/volunteers in each hospital.
