Research summary
Arguably the most important aspect of a prosthetic limb is the socket fit which provides the interface between the limb user and the artificial limb. Poorly fitting sockets may cause pain, tissue breakdown and reduced activity. To design an appropriately fitting socket, the shape of the person’s limb must be captured accurately and reliably. This shape captured requires further modification in an artisan manner by highly skilled clinicians to simulate loaded conditions.
Current Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems are hand held and require considerable practitioner skill and time to capture limb shape. A novel shape capture system has been developed to facilitate CAD shape capture in an automated manner. It is proposed that this method will be accurate, reliable, time saving, reduce the skill and variability in the shape captured and eliminate the modification stage.
This study will compare the socket fit and dimensions of shape capture via traditional and the novel method. Patients will be scanned using both a currently used scanner (Omega white light) and a novel automated scanner (PCAD) and randomly allocated a prosthetic socket created by one or other methods. Patients and clinicians will be asked to fill in validated questionnaires and record outcome measurements at regular intervals to assess the fit and function of the prosthetic sockets.REC name
