Evaluation of a Group Programme for women who have experienced childhood sexual abuse (qualitative aspect)

We are evaluating a new group therapy for women who continue to experience trauma from childhood sexual abuse; we want to find out if it is helpful and if it can be improved.

The therapy is a 12 session Group Programme being evaluated through partnership between Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre North Wales, and Stepping Stones.

People abused in childhood can continue to experience lasting problems. Talking therapies help some, but talking about abuse can be difficult. In the Group Programme no-one has to talk about their experiences, instead the focus is on understanding how childhood sexual abuse can affect us, learning how to reduce it's effects, and building personal hopes for the future. We believe these things can provide a foundation towards recovery.

Each Group Programme has been held once a week for twelve weeks at one of three venues across North Wales. Each session is led by NHS staff and lasts 2 ½ hours. Participants were asked to attend all sessions and to participate in different voluntary learning and creative activities.

This qualitative part of the evaluation is through semi-structured, one to one interviews with a research officer, that women who have completed the Group Programme will be invited to take part in. The responses will be transcribed and anonymised, then thematically analysed.

Dissemination of the research will include presentation of results at local and national level to specialists and professionals working with sexual violence and/or trauma. We will publish/present in appropriate journals and or at conferences. A report will be submitted to Welsh Government and a summary of the findings will be shared with all Group Programme participants who have taken part in the research.
