Research summary
The project will evaluate the efficacy of delivering two cognitive/behavioural approaches in managing sleep settling and sleep disruption in children with disabiltiies through a clinic based intervention.
Inclusion and exclusion criteria will apply. The project will study 8 families, with 4 recieving sleep restriction interventions and a further 4 recieving scheduled awakening interventions. Families will complete an in-depth sleep history assessment; this will indicate the sleep problem. Base-line sleep data will be obtained via a parent kept sleep diary and with the aid of the Actigraphy; these recordings will be kept between 2- 4 weeks at base-line. Frequency tick chart measure will also be collected during the intervention phase; this will provide on-going data as to intervention sucess. Sleep diary and actigraphy measures will be repeated at 6 months. Parents will be asked to complete the validated Qulaity of Life Inventory pre and post intervention intervals and there after at 6-monthly intervals until exit form the service/study. These measures will provide statistical significance of the impact a child's poor sleep is having on parents quality of life. Parents will also be asked to provide an account relating to the ease (or otherwise) of implementing the intervention.REC name
