  • Research summary

Type 2 diabetes can cause serious health problems. If people ‘at risk’ of diabetes make changes to their lifestyle they can reduce their chances of getting type 2 diabetes.

The NHS and Diabetes UK are introducing a scheme called 'Healthier You: the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme' (NHS DPP). People in England will be offered a course to help them change their lifestyle to reduce their risk.

We need to know if the NHS DPP works and have designed a project to answer these questions.

We will see what types of patients are invited on the course, and talk to patients and NHS staff to understand how people are invited. We will see if the NHS DPP is used by those who need it most.

We will talk to NHS staff managing the NHS DPP. We will ask them how they set up the service, and what problems they face.

We will watch as the NHS DPP is delivered to patients, checking to see if it is done well.

We will see if patients finish the course and show improved outcomes, such as lower blood sugar or weight.

We will feed this information back to the NHS DPP so they can make improvements.

We need to test if the NHS DPP prevents type 2 diabetes. We will use anonymous data from GP medical records to see if there are fewer cases of diabetes after the NHS DPP is introduced, compared to the number of cases before. Then we will compare patients who were offered the course, with patients who are similar, but did not use the course.

Finally, we will take our data and other information to develop an ‘economic model,’ to see what costs and benefits the NHS DPP might have in the longer term.
