  • Research summary

Assessing the goal setting component of DESMOND, a structured diabetes self-management education(DSME)programme for people newly diagnosed

DSME programmes like DESMOND aim to prepare people for a lifetime of self-management by motivating them to engage in behaviour change. Many DSME programmes include goal setting sessions, where attendees are encouraged to choose their own behaviour change goals (goal-setting) and write down structured activities to reach goals (action plans).

Although research has shown the benefits of DSME programmes there is little research on the goal-setting part of such programmes and what factors might influence whether or not goals are set and/or achieved. The purpose of this study is to assess how effective the goal-setting session of DESMOND is in helping people set and achieve behavioural change goals and factors that may impact on this.

People with type 2 diabetes attending DESMOND will be eligible for inclusion in the study. The study will be conducted over a two year period in the three clinical commission groups in the county of Leicestershire and in the Health Services Executive (HSE) West region in the Republic of Ireland.

Both quantitative and qualitative data will be collected. Copies of goal-setting/action planning forms will be collected from 352 attendees following completion of DESMOND to measure how many attendees have chosen behaviour change goal(s) and completed a structured action plan. Twenty goal-setting sessions will be audio-taped to evaluate characteristics of the delivery of this session that may impact on the setting of goals and completion of action plans. Postal questionnaires will be sent to study participants at one week and at 3 months following DESMOND to assess individual factors associated with setting goals and goal attainment. Focus groups with educators and semi-structured interviews with DESMOND attendees will explore perceived barriers and facilitators to setting goals and goal attainment.
