Research summary
Cultural factors are key in the onset, diagnosis, and treatment of psychosis (Rathod et al., 2018), particularly for those of South Asian Muslim heritage who mostly associate the condition with religious and spiritual factors (Mirza et al., 2019; Bhikha et al., 2019). Family interventions are a key recommendation for individuals experiencing psychosis, however mental health interventions are all but reflective of these cultural frameworks of understanding (Virdee et al., 2017). The aim of the current research is to evaluate the access, experiences and outcomes of South Asian Muslim families receiving family interventions in Bradford to determine how they can be culturally adapted to meet the needs of this population. South Asian Muslim families who have received family interventions for psychosis will take part in focus groups in Horton Park Medical Practice (Bradford) and Meridian House (Keighley) to ensure the research is aligned with their views and needs. The findings will result in the development of culturally appropriate recommendations to adapt family interventions for psychosis, to increase the number of people in Bradford receiving psychological interventions that take their religious and cultural views into consideration.
