Research summary
This is a study of a new competency framework designed for clinical research practitioners (CRP) at a South London acute trust. The object of the investigation is CRP work practice and professionalization. The research question we are investigating is what are the barriers and enablers to the implementation of a CRP competency framework, and how has it changed CRP practice and identity?
This study is relevant to patients and the public because the role of clinical research practitioner involves contact with patients within the context of hospital-based clinical research. CRPs are a relatively new profession, but are growing in numbers across the UK, including at the present study site where they are now the fastest growing segment of the research workforce. In an effort to ensure standardized, high-quality practice, the trust is introducing a new competency framework for all CRPs. The framework is also intended to contribute to the professionalization of this workforce. It is important that we assess the impact of this framework to ensure future service improvement. And it is important to gain understanding of an emerging role within the National Health Service.
The area of service being studied is clinical research delivery. Clinical research practitioners, research managers and research nurses are eligible to participate in this study. The study site is Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital. The study will last for 16 months, commencing September 1st, 2019 and ending December 31st, 2020. Study participants will participate in focus groups, interviews, questionnaires and/or shadowing.
