Research summary
This is the final stage of a work package to investigate, co-design and test resources to help families living with older people with learning disabilities to prepare for parental loss, transitions in care, and end-of-life care for carers. It is part of a wider programme of work, "Growing Older, Planning Ahead".
We are currently conducting stage two of the work package, working with older people with learning disabilities and their families to co-design resources to aid future planning. Stage one involved interviewing older people with learning disabilities (aged 40+) living at home with family; elderly parental carers; and siblings/close relatives. These interviews and focus groups explored experiences, hopes and concerns about future planning.
The co-design group have produced a set of cards to help families talk about and plan for future support needs. These are available as physical cards and online versions, and come with a template booklet to record the results of conversations and plans for action. This study will evaluate the usefulness of the planning cards and their impact on planning for the future and related concerns. This will be tested through mixed methods, including questionnaires and observations.
