Research summary
This case study research focuses on evaluating pharmacy input to pharmaceutical care of patients in dispensing medical practices in the Scottish Highlands. At present dispensing medical practices provide a service for some or all of their patients. There is a clear lack of clinical pharmacist input to the care of patients in these remote areas in the Highlands. Prescription for Excellence, A Vision and Action Plan for the right pharmaceutical care through integrated partnerships and innovation, describes the strategic direction for pharmacy practice in Scotland over the next decade. There are ambitions for all pharmacists to be active clinical pharmacist independent prescribers which will provide a great opportunity to advance the pharmaceutical care of these patients. This will also be enabled through developments with ehealth technologies. We will focus on collecting data from both the clinical pharmacists and patients living in these rural areas to obtain their views and perspectives to current and potential future clinical pharmacist support services together with the use of ehealth technologies used in providing these prescription for excellence services.
