Research summary
In this study, children with social and communication disorders who have been referred to an NHS Children's Centre will be assessed using the ABLLS-R (Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised) prior to undergoing a parent training intervention. The ABLLS-R is a criterion based assessment of behvaiour and development and can be used to assess and monitor children's progress. Parent training will be offered to parents of such children, at the Children's Centre and will consist of evidence-based child teaching techniques, motivating children to learn, behaviour management, skills-based teaching etc. The ABLLS-R will be used to re-assess children's progress after six months, in order to monitor what gains have been made in the interim period.
Previously, the ABLLS-R has been utilised to evaluate Centre-based group interventions, and last year we conducted parent training in the children's own homes. Research indicates that parent training can be an effective method for teaching children new skills. We plan to compare the results of the current cohort with the results of previous cohorts. It is planned to enlist the help of two ABA Master's students from Bangor University to evaluate the data systematically and provide support with the training.REC name
