Research summary
In the UK women aged 25 to 64 are invited to attend cervical cancer screening. By detecting cancer earlier it is estimated to save 4500 lives per year. Despite this the numbers of people attending screening has fallen, with uptake as low as 49% in some areas of London. In 2021, to increase attendance the NHS Cervical Screening Programme in London began sending 'catch-up' SMS messaging to invite women who had not attended their previous invitation to call and attend an appointment. This study, is a data project to understand which of the different messages NHS England used for these catch-up rounds was the most effective at increasing attendance.
