Research summary
Food and other allergies (e.g. Venom) remain a major public health concern, with adolescents and young adults at greatest risk of fatal anaphylaxis. The British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI) Allergy Action Plan provides standardised emergency instructions to guide patients and carers, yet its effectiveness is often hindered by barriers such as unclear instructions, limited training, and literacy or language challenges. These difficulties can compromise timely recognition and response during allergic emergencies.
This study will qualitatively evaluate how patients, carers, and proxies perceive the usability, accessibility, and effectiveness of the current BSACI paper-based Allergy Action Plan. Through focus groups and workshops, it will explore real-world experiences, and identify barriers encountered by individuals with communication or literacy needs.
The project will be conducted in focus groups and workshops to qualitatively evaluate the user experience of the current BSACI paper-based plan. Data will be collected via semi-structured focus groups, with transcripts analysed using thematic analysis to generate key themes and recommendations.
Expected outcomes include a deeper understanding of current barriers, practical user-driven recommendations, and evidence to inform improvements in the accessibility and inclusivity of allergy action plans. Ultimately, this work aims to enhance patient safety, confidence, and emergency preparedness in allergy care.
