Research summary
Rehabilitation for patients with diseases of the heart and blood vessels improves health and reduces readmissions. Patient uptake and adherence to the current forms of cardiac rehabilitation offered is low. In addition patients tend to undertake little exercise at home in between their sessions of supervised rehabilitation. Patients with coronary heart disease referred for rehabilitation will be assessed for health of the blood vessels and heart, fitness and quality of life at the beginning and end of their 6 weeks of standard cardiac rehabilitation. In addition patients will be monitored throughout their exercise sessions to understand how closely current practice meets recommendations for exercise in rehabilitation. Physical activity levels undertaken at home in the first and last week of rehabilitation will be assessed using small activity monitors. This study will assess whether current practice is beneficial for this patient population and whether adaptations may be necessary to gain better clinical benefits.
