Research summary
Although many literature has studied the engagement between residents and care staff, very little of them emphasised on identifying the types of engagement (Gallagher & Keenan, 2000; Meeks & Looney, 2011). In this study, we would like to explore the engagement between staff and the person they care for in a measurable terms where the behaviours are coded with a clear definition. In previous phase, we have evaluated the distribution of time staff spent on various category of behaviours in 24-hour span, across seven days. We found that most of the occurrence for engagement between staff and residents were in short intervals (i.e., less than 30 seconds). However, as we were only recording the duration without discriminating the types of the behaviours, we couldn’t explore further about the characteristics of engagement that took place between staff and residents (i.e., care related communication or leisure related physical activities).
In this phase we would like to examine the types of engagement between care staff and the person they care for, duration of each occurrence, and the frequency of the occurrence. The type of staff-resident engagement we might record in this phase include but not limited to casual, functional, treatment, and leisure activities. All activities will be consisted of either physical activities or verbal communication, or both.
This study will be a continuation from the previous study where we evaluate the staff distribution of time on various behaviours. The findings from the study will add to the existing knowledge of using behavioural analytic techniques to investigate the quality of care deliver by care staff for people with dementia.REC name
