  • Research summary

EuroPOWER is a European prospective multicentre observational study evaluating clinical outcomes for adults undergoing elective colorectal surgery within any compliance of an Enchanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol (including patients with 0 compliance). The ERAS protocols involve using various perioperative strategies to facilitate faster recovery and discharge from hospital through reducing postoperative stress and improving clinical practice. Compliance with the ERAS protocols is very variable across centres and countries.

The decrease in postoperative complications seems to be directly related to the compliance of these protocols. To solve this problem we need concrete data in which these protocols are carried out with a high level of compliance and by the analysis of predefined complications. The aim of the study is to provide detailed data describing the association of the ERAS protocols with postoperative complications and associated mortality.

The results of this study will allow to identify the below points:
    - the type of patients presenting postoperative complications
    - components of the ERAS protocols that are independently associated with a reduction in postoperative complications and hospital stay.
