  • Data collection arrangements

There is currently no European benchmark of outcomes in spinal cord injury. There is a large North American database but this lacks rigour and only focuses on certain centres. Due to this, there have been international proposals for a standard spinal cord injury dataset. This proposal is a European-wide collaboration, based in Zurich, to standardise examination and recording of outcomes in spinal cord injury. EMSCI does not undertake new treatments or interventions but provides a template for systematic examination of spinal patients in the expectation of future trials of neuroprotective and neuroregenerative treatment. Local data collected on the outcomes of people with a spinal cord injury in Scotland will be shared with a central hub in Switzerland and all the collaborating centres across Europe will have access to the multicentre data.

  • Research programme

There are approximately 100 new traumatic spinal cord injuries per year in Scotland. This database will provide further understanding about the neurological recovery after spinal cord injury. This information will hopefully enable us to develop and apply more effective treatments and rehabilitation outcomes for this patient group.
