  • Research summary

Cardiomyopathies are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterised by structural and functional abnormalities of the myocardium in the absence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, valvular disease and congenital heart defects. Individually the disorders are relatively uncommon, but collectively they have an estimated prevalence within the European population of 3 per 1000 individuals.
All cardiomyopathies may cause premature death from arrhythmia and/or progressive heart failure and represent a substantial burden to the healthcare services of all European Nations. To date, most information about the presentation and natural history of individual disorders has derived from cohort studies in a few centres in Europe and the United States of America.
Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the myocardium diagnosed using well established histological and immunohistochemical criteria. In some cases, the clinical presentation overlaps with dilated cardiomyopathy, but other clinical scenarios including myocardial infarction, and cardiac arrhythmia are frequent.
The aim of this registry is to collect data on the epidemiology and outcomes of adults and children with cardiomyopathy and clinically suspected or biopsy proven myocarditis seen across a range of centres in Europe in order to improve clinical service provision and therapy.
