Research summary
EURO-SCaLE is a review of routine care for people with limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC), a fast-growing lung cancer that is still confined to the chest and can be treated with the aim of cure. The study will describe how patients were diagnosed and treated in everyday practice across hospitals in Italy, Ireland, Spain, Romania, and the UK, and what outcomes they experienced, before immunotherapy became widely used for LS-SCLC.
Doctors and trained staff will look back at existing medical records (no new tests or visits) for adults diagnosed between 1 June 2021 and 30 June 2023. Information collected will include: tests used for diagnosis (such as CT, PET-CT and MRI scans), details of first treatments (for example chemotherapy and radiotherapy given together or separately, surgery, dose and timing), side effects (like inflammation of the oesophagus or lungs), treatments given if the cancer progresses, and health service use (outpatient appointments, emergency visits, hospital stays). The study will also summarise patient characteristics (age, sex, smoking history, general fitness and other illnesses) and outcomes such as how long people live after starting treatment and how the cancer responds.
No changes to patient care are involved, and there are no direct risks or benefits to participants. Sites will seek ethical approval to review records without consent where appropriate (for example to include people who have died), to avoid bias. If a waiver is not granted, written consent will be obtained before any data are extracted. All data are handled confidentially and securely, in line with data protection laws. Results will be reported in group form only; individuals will not be identifiable.
By providing clear, real-world information on current practice and outcomes, EURO-SCaLE will help clinicians, the NHS and policymakers understand where care aligns with guidelines, identify areas for improvement, and plan for newer treatments for LS-SCLC. The study is sponsored by AstraZeneca with operational support from IQVIA and aims to review at least 380 patients’ records, with reporting expected in 2026.REC name
