Research summary
The incidence of melanoma continues to increase and yet to date, the unmet needs of individuals who have been diagnosed with melanoma have not been fully explored in the UK population. Being diagnosed with melanoma has significant impact emotionally, socially and psychologically but there is limited guidance for clinicians on how best to support patients with a diagnosis of melanoma after their initial treatment. This mixed methods study will systematically evaluate these needs in melanoma survivors within one year of being given their diagnosis.
We will undertake an electronic questionnaire study in patients with a history of melanoma. We will also assess a) the impact that a diagnosis of melanoma has on a person’s quality of life, b) how concerned that a person who has had melanoma worries that it will come back once it has been treated, c) what people with history of melanoma currently do in relation to sun protection and examining their own skin (also known as skin self-examination or SSE). We will also carry out semi-structured interviews with melanoma survivors, to explore in greater depth, their personal views on SSE and to discuss ways in which we can increase SSE which might help all skin cancer survivors.
The results from this study will form the basis upon which we aim to develop interventions that will support melanoma survivors living with and beyond their diagnosis of melanoma.
