Research summary
Peripheral vascular disease is common, as are its risk factors, which include diabetes and smoking. Lower limb amputation is a recognised treatment for critical ischaemia, a condition which can result in chronic pain, infection and gangrene. Furthermore, without amputation, these complications can be life-threatening.
Cultural and religious attitudes towards amputation may vary. However, there has been little research into this and, more specifically, into attitudes towards this potentially life-saving surgery.
Culturally competent services have been shown to result in better outcomes and to furthermore enhance provider-patient relationships. Improving our understanding of what patients find acceptable may facilitate the development of more appropriate treatments
