Research summary
Cluster headache is a severe and disabling headache condition that affects 0.1% of the population. The management of cluster headache is divided into acute and preventative treatment. High flow oxygen is an established acute treatment for patients with cluster headache attacks and is found to be effective in stopping an attack within 15 minutes. However, approximately 20% do not respond to this.
This study will look at patients who have a good response to oxygen in the community. A short questionnaire made in collaboration with the cluster headache patient group: Organisation for the Understanding of Cluster Headaches (OUCH-UK). This questionnaire will be sent to potential participants on the registry in South Central Region. It is estimated that there will be 500 cluster headache patients on this registry receiving home oxygen. The questionnaire will cover the clinical features of the cluster headache and treatments used and their responses. We hope to establish clinical predictors for patients who will have a good response to oxygen as an acute treatment for their cluster headache attacks.
