Research summary
Pulmonary hypertension occurs more frequently in women than men. We have evidence that oestrogen metabolism may be different in men and women and may change again in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. We also believe that oestrogen metabolism may change throughout the menstrual cycle. Our first study will be to look at oestrogen metabolite levels in plasma and urine in normal women at various days throughout their menstrual cycle. Any women of pre-menapausal age would be eligible. The blood samples will be taken by a medical Doctor at The University. This will determine the sample day for subsequent studies. The second study will determine oestrogen metabolite levels in plasma and urine from patients with pulmonary hypertension and from healthy age and gender matched controls. The blood samples will be taken at The Golden Jubilee Hospital by D Colin Church or one of his assigned Medical colleagues. Oestrogen metabolites will be measured by Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS).
