Research summary
Summary of the CRAFT Study
The CRAFT study (CRyptoglandular Anal Fistula Treatment) is an international, multicentre, prospective cohort study aimed at improving care for patients with cryptoglandular anal fistulas. These abnormal tracts, often arising after an anorectal abscess, affect 1 in 5000 people annually in Europe. Current treatments lack strong evidence, leading to inconsistent practices and variable outcomes. To address this, the study will assess treatments using a standardised set of clinician-reported and patient-reported outcomes from the Anal Fistula Core Outcome Measurement Set (AF-COMS). Data will be collected over 12 months, providing insights into diagnostic pathways, treatments, and outcomes.
By promoting consistency in outcome measurement and reporting, the CRAFT study aims to improve the evidence base and guide better treatment decisions for this challenging condition.
